Signature Level 1 Award in Deaf Awareness and Communication For Organisations

This course is assessed externally, it has to follow the Signature curriculum. Therefore it is more of a generic course which covers all the different types of deafness and deafblindness. If you are looking for a more structured input e.g. working with a deaf colleague or employee, or working with deaf clients, then one of our tailored introductory course or half-day courses might better suit your requirements.

Unit K101 includes:

the language commonly used to describe deafness and deafblindness, and deaf and deafblind people; statistics on deafness in the UK; how deaf and deafblind people communicate; the factors that affect successful communication; how a deaf or deafblind person’s language and cultural background affects communication.

Unit T101 includes:

selecting the appropriate communication tactics for use with a deaf or deafblind person; ascertaining the best environmental conditions for communicating with a deaf or deafblind person; using a range of tactics for communicating with deaf and deafblind people; repairing a breakdown in communication with a deaf or deafblind person.
